Abstract

The vulnerable road users safety problems are a priority evidenced many times by the European Commission. The low weight and the absence of protecting devices make pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists particularly exposed to the risk of having an accident with serious consequences. In the European Union, the 17% of the road traffic victims are pedestrians, while 6% are cyclists. The situation is even more serious in the Emerging Economies.

SAFERBRAIN (Innovative Guidelines and Tools for Vulnerable Road Users Safety in India and Brazil) is an international research project in which European, Indian and Brazilian research centers are involved. The project is co-funded by the European Commission ??? DG RTD.

SAFERBRAIN analyzed the main risk factors of the vulnerable road users in India and Brazil and, basing on the European good practices and research, developed methodologies and innovative tools to design and maintain safe road infrastructures in the Emerging Economies, like India and Brazil. Specific attention has been given to Road Safety Audits.

IT developed the Decision Support System (i.e. information system) to support technicians and decision makers in planning and managing vulnerable road users safety. The DSS is able to provide support in a corrective way (i.e. definition of measures basing on accident figures) or in a preventive way (i.e. definition of measures to prevent accidents in case of risky situations ??? Road Safety Audit).
